Monuments of historical significance in London


The Tower of London

The Tower of London is on the north bank of the river Thames in central London. It was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman conquest of England. The castle was used as a prison since at least 1100, altought that was not its primary purpose. It as a grand palace early in its history, it served as a royal residence.

First of all in 1066, The objective of the Tower was twofold :
- Protect the Normans from the people of London.
- Protect the city from attacks outside.

Today the Tower of London is one of the most visited monuments and jewelries of Queen are still there.


The Tower Bridge

The Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, over the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London. It was built of 1886 to 1894. It allowed to pass cars and boats.


Westminster Abbey
 
Westminster Abbey is one of the most famous religious edifice in London. It was built in the XIIIe century. It is located to the west of the city, hence the name. It is there that the majority of the royal burial were celebrated, the most recent being the burial of Princess Diana in 1997 and those of the Queen mother Elizabeth in 2002. But she is especially known as the place of crowning and grave of most of kings and queens of England. Indeed, since 1066, all the British monarches, with the exception of Edouard V and Edouard VIII, were crowned there.
